Happy New Year

Wow...what a year!

The past couple of months I've been fortunate enough to score a few animated shorts for a group of very talented animators.

Paint Wars - Score

The films are currently in postproduction, but I will post them here as soon as they're ready. There's also a couple more scores in the making that will be ready early 2014 :)

All the best and Happy New Year!

I recently wrote a short track for my father-in-laws birthday and decided to create a screencast of it as I like to get more active on YouTube :)

I guess that makes me an educated composer :)

Busy Times

Things have been quite busy lately, which is awesome :)

First I've had my exam for the Music for the Media Course (amazing course) and passed. Yay! Due to copyrights I can't show the film, but here's the music I submitted:

"Voices Inside"

I've also been working on some more music for Dark Raid, an upcoming FPS game from Vector Games, which looks amazing. I did a short cue for a trailer for the game:

"I am Muddy" - Dark Raid Trailer

I will post the trailer as soon as it's online.

I'm currently working on three really cool short films, which all have deadlines within a couple of months, so expect some updates on that shortly.

I really didn't expect to get so busy this early in my composing career and I feel truly grateful to all the people that I have previously worked with and that I'm currently working with. A film is a directors baby and to hand it over to an unknown dude who claims to be able to make music for it, is really admirable. I'll do my best to prove them right in their choice of composer :)

Game Score and a Student Assignment

For the past month I've been composing music for the upcoming video game Dark Raid from Vector Games. From what I've seen so far, this game looks amazing and I can't wait to get to play it.

To work on it has been such a great experience and it's been a true pleasure to work with the people behind it. We plan to release the full score, as a free download (with options for donations) on my site, as soon as the game hits the shelves.

Here's "Dark Raid - Main Theme":

Make sure to keep an eye out for the game. Check their website and their facebook page for updates.

I'm also doing ThinkSpace's Cinematic Orchestration course and I'm currently covering woodwinds which I haven't written especially for before. Here's a piece I wrote for one of the assignments for winds and strings:

"Funny Feelings - A Love Theme"

Another Student Score and Melodic Rock

I've just finished another score for the Music for the Media course.

1M1 - "The Robbery"

1M2 - "Cold Nights Main Title"

1M3 - "Agent Sinclair"

This was my last assignment for this course and I have to say it's been amazing. I've learned a lot about writing music for media and I can highly recommend this course. Check it out here.

I have also recently written a short cue for Varun Sethnas Animation Mentor class 2 (+ class 1) showreel. This time Varun wanted a melodic rock track and even though that's not what I would usually write, I love a challenge and jumped into it.

When sitting down to compose this I quickly realized that all I had of electric guitar samples was from the Kontakt Library, which is great for starters, but doesn't really hold up. I went ahead and purchased Impact Soundworks Shreddage II which combined with Guitar Rig 5 is an amazing library (Revalver, an amp effect thingy is included in Shreddage II, but it crashed my Cubase big time, so I went with Guitar Rig). Anyways, here's the cue:

"Brothers in Arms" - Varun Sethna AM Class 2 ShowReel

I'll put the video in as soon as it's available on Youtube or Vimeo.

A few weeks ago I was asked to make a piece of music to go with a beautiful timelapse video created by Gisel Calvo. Here's the video with my music.

Nell The Narcoleptic: Asleep on the Job Released!

Back in May I was given the opportunity to score the wonderful little animated short Nell The Narcoleptic: Asleep on the Job, directed by Belle Barber and Linden Kirkby. The film has had it's initial festival run and it is now available for online screening.

"A Sunny Day" - String Quartet Piece

Here's a little piece I wrote for a string quartet. It was fun to get to play around with the Friedlander Solo Violin from Embertone, which I used both for 1st and 2nd violin. The viola and cello is from Vienna's Special Edition Library.

Here's the short piece called "A Sunny Day":

"Fighting Back" - Action Cue

I purchased Native Instruments Komplete 9 Ultimate last week and to try out some of the new instruments, I decided to take a crack at composing one of those big epic action trailer tracks. Enjoy!

"The Best is Yet to Come"

I recently composed a track for my parents-in-laws golden wedding anniversary. Married for 50 years - that's impressive.

Music for Varun Sethna's AM Class 1 Showreel

I've had a blast creating a cue for Animation Mentor student Varun Sethna's class 1 show-reel. He wanted a big band-ish track and that's not something I normally would make, so it was really cool to try to tackle something in that style.

Here's Varun's showreel with my music:

Follow him on YouTube and Vimeo for more of his AM journey into animation.

"The Stalk, The Chase & The Kill" - Action Cue

I just finished the second cue for a student project I'm currently working on. This cue is scored to pictures of a lioness stalking, run off to chase and eventually catch and kill a wilder beest.

The Two Prides - Theme

I'm currently working on another student project scoring a wild life documentary. Here's the first of two cues I'm working on for this project

Score for "Nell the Narcoleptic - Asleep on the Job"

I recently had the great pleasure of scoring the animated short "Nell the Narcoleptic - Asleep on the job", directed by New Zealand based Belle Barber and Linden Kirkby.

It is a really wonderful little film with some great characters and I'm truly proud to have contributed to it.

The film is submitted to several festivals, so I'm not able to show it yet, but stay tuned, as soon as it's released I'll post it here.

In the meantime, here's the score I did:

"Forever Young" 500 000 Views On YouTube!

My 2007 Animation Mentor short film, "Forever Young" has reached 500 000 (and counting) views on YouTube. Amazing!

The Mummy Awakens

I just finished a 5 minute score for an animated tv show as a student project at ThinkSpace Music for the Media. Unfortunately due to copyrights I can not show the film, but here is the score I did.

I had a blast working on this. It was very challenging with lots of hitpoints and "mickey mousing", but in terms of syncing music to picture this was an invaluable learning process.

John Williams' "Flight to Neverland" MockUp

To learn and practice devices, techniques and orchestration, I'm daily doing mock-ups of pieces I really love.

Here's my mock-up of "Flight to Neverland" by John Williams.

"Last-Minute Shopping" by Martin K

Here's a short track I wrote for a contest.

New Website Up and Running

Finally my new website is up and running, at least to a certain degree :)

On this site I will post stuff about my journey as it ventures into composing music, as well as animation - I guess I get too restless staying in one area for too long. Actually, it kind of complete the circle. Back in the early 90's, I had a studio producing commercials for local radio stations and I made most of the music myself -  on a Korg 01W - ahh good times :)

Anyways, my others sites, www.martink.no and www.martinkanimation.com is still up and running, but the updates will happen here, so make sure to check back often.

all the best,
Martin
